Windshield wipers are one of the basic and important automotive accessories. It improves and maintains your overall visibility on the road. Without a properly working windshield wiper, you’ll be risking yourself to accidents, especially during is rainy and winter season.

Wipers are also the automotive accessories that most car owners tend to change due to damage. It could last for years, especially good performing windshield wipers. Although wipers are not as expensive as other car parts, however, frequently replacing wipers costs a lot of cash.

It is easy to maintain windshield wipers in the best condition. Below are the tips you must follow to keep your wipers in top condition and make them last longer.

#1 Regularly Remove the Grime

De-grime windshield wipers regularly. The best time to do this is when you gas. Wipe down the wiper blades using a damp rag or a paper towel. Never use a dry cloth or paper to remove the dirt on the wipers because it will only cause damages, particularly scratches on the windshield.

Apply window washing solution on the rag. Then, lift each wiper blade away from the windshield and run the damp cloth on the blade from end to end. If you don’t have a windshield wiping solution, you can always buy one at the gas station.

#2 Wash the Windows

Always wash the windshield to remove dirt. Regular washing helps get rid of dust, debris, and grime stuck on the wipers and windows from long hours of trips. Likewise, washing car windows help maintain the integrity of wipers and windows. When there is less dirt on your car windows, there are fewer chances of the wipers catching the debris and scratching it on the windows.

#3 Wet Car Windows when Running the Wipers

Never run the wipers when the car windows are dry. It could damage the wipers and cause tearing. Also, if debris stuck on the wipers could scratch the windows. Running water on the windshield before using wipers will prevent dirt from damaging both.

#4 Remove Snow, Ice, and Other Debris on the Wipers

During the winter season, snow and ice could get stuck on the wipers. Make sure to remove them before running the wipers. You can use a scraper to get rid of the ice and snow. Also, wait for the ice to melt before running the windshield wipers. Forcing it to work while there’s ice on the wiper will only cause damage.

Aside from snow and ice, make sure to remove insect guts and small debris on the wipers.

#5 Protect the Windshield Wipers by Covering them

Cover your car when it is parked at home. If you don’t have a car cover, any cloth will do to cover the windshield wipers. Also, cover the blades when your car is in direct sunlight. Exposure to sunlight makes the rubber blades turn brittle. If you don’t own a windshield cover, then park in the shade
