Things to Remember Before Wiring a Home Network

Posted by entri in Uncategorized

Creating a wired network is exhausting, time-consuming, and messy. Here are the things you need to remember to help you utilize time and effort in creating a wired network at home effectively.

Wiring a Home Network

Many homeowners have switched from cloud connectivity to a wired network or Ethernet system. The latter is more efficient and practical compared to the former. It is not too expensive but guarantees a higher data and signal transfer rate in local networks with minimal interruptions, unlike cloud connections. It is one of the reasons why most businesses and professional sectors lean on the Ethernet system. It is more reliable and optimizes productivity.

The right time to install a wired home network is when you want to upgrade your network connectivity. If you notice that your Ethernet is faulty, it is also another reason to re-install when the damage is immense. You can find out here the signs of a damaged Ethernet system.

It is not hard to install a wired home network. However, make sure to prepare yourself for the time and effort you will have to employ. Creating a wired network at home is messy, exhausting, and requires time. What you can do to avoid wasting time and effort is to remember these guidelines.

#1 Create a Plan

Planning is the most crucial part of creating a wired home network. Detailed planning reduces the risk of wasting resources and time.

Before starting your project, consider the factors involved in creating a home network. For instance, you should take note of the distribution point of the system, its location, and the number of rooms you need to wire. Likewise, determine the wiring route, number of sockets in each room, socket locations, whether you will use a patch panel, and the type of Ethernet cable you will use.

Cat-6 is the middle ground Ethernet cable. It is a good option for household applications. However, if you want a faster transmission speed for gaming or business purposes, go for Cat-7 or Cat-8.

#2 Prepare the Tools and Equipment

After creating a plan, make a list of the tools you will need for the project. The pieces of equipment you might have to collect are basic tools, such as drills, networking tools for crimping cables, UTP cable, termination sockets and connectors, and Ethernet switches.

#3 Determine Home Wiring Options

There are two options for installing a home wiring network. Either you choose a central location or go for several switches per floor and wire back to the central location.

In a central location, all cables from every room sockets come together in a single switch. You can wire the cables in a patch panel or use an RJ-45 plug for cable ends. A patch panel is advisable since it is more flexible but too much for a simple home network. An RJ-45 plug is suitable for home Ethernet systems.

#4 Ask for Assistance

Ask for help rather than doing it by yourself if you are hesitant of installing an Ethernet system. You can also check out tutorial videos online or look for sources that provide free assistance on how to build an Ethernet system at home.

Always do plenty of research before touching your home’s Ethernet system. Make sure to know the basics to avoid errors that could lead to more cost.
